From Passion to Global Influence in Interior Design

From a young age, Joss Knight knew he wanted to create. It wasn’t just about design—it was about the way spaces shape emotions, influence behavior, and tell a story. That early fascination led him to study interior design at Billy Blue College of Design, where he quickly made a name for himself.

His understanding of space was deeply personal. Growing up, home was a refuge, a place where emotions could be safely contained. This perspective shaped his approach to design, where he prioritized environments that felt both beautiful and deeply personal. He recognized the power of sensory design, an idea that resonated with industry mentor John Eussen, who emphasized the importance of touch, sight, and scent in shaping the way people experience spaces.

Joss’s talent was undeniable, and it was recognized early. Winning the 2019 Youth Institute Design Competition gave him the confidence and industry exposure that set his career in motion. More than just an award, it was an opportunity—a stepping stone to mentorships, networking, and real-world experience. He understood that in a competitive field, taking on extra opportunities beyond formal education could accelerate success.

His first major role in the industry was with an established Sydney-based design studio, which also had a global presence. This experience gave him insight into international trends and practices. Yet, despite the prestige of working for a renowned firm, he realized he had a different vision for his work—one that could only be fully realized by branching out on his own.

At just 21, Joss made a bold decision: he launched his own business, Studio Joss. Personal branding played a significant role in his early success. Through social media, he built an audience that recognized his distinct style—neutral palettes, layered textures, and a refined yet livable aesthetic. His ethos was simple: balance timeless elegance with modern innovation, creating spaces that felt sophisticated yet effortless.

His business quickly gained traction, attracting clients who resonated with his design philosophy. Yet, he didn’t stop at interior spaces. Seeing a gap in the homeware market, he founded Nightly, a brand dedicated to luxury bedding, sleepwear, and bath products. It was a natural extension of his design principles, allowing more people to experience the Studio Joss aesthetic without committing to a full interior design service.

Joss’s influences extend beyond Australia. European designers like Joseph Dirand, Vincent Van Duysen, and Kelly Wearstler have shaped his approach, inspiring him to push boundaries. He believes in observing design behaviors rather than merely following trends, contributing to the growing global recognition of Australian interior design.

Despite his rapid rise, challenges have been inevitable. Managing a business, overseeing a team, and balancing creative vision with financial realities have been significant learning curves. Yet, his philosophy remains simple—say yes to opportunities and figure out the details later. That mindset has led to extraordinary projects, including a Parisian apartment, Simon Cohen’s penthouse in Sydney, and work for renowned artist Dina Broadhurst.

His advice to young designers is clear: work hard, play hard, and never give up. In an industry where persistence and passion are key, he proves that success isn’t about age—it’s about seizing the right opportunities at the right time. Joss Knight is no longer just an emerging talent; he is shaping the future of interior design.
